GAUGE:

16 sts = about 4 in. (10 cm) in St st worked in rows (k on RS, p on WS).

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

STITCH EXPLANATION:

ssk (slip, slip, knit) Slip next 2 sts as if to knit, one at a time, to right needle; insert left needle into fronts of these 2 sts and knit them tog – 1 st decreased.
Yo (yarn over)
An increase that also creates a small decorative hole (eyelet) in the fabric, worked as follows:
1. Bring yarn to front, between the needles.
2. Take yarn to back, over the right needle. This creates the new st. You are now ready to proceed with the next st as instructed.

NOTES:

1. Upper portion of Seat Cover is worked back and forth in rows on circular needle, as if working on straight needles.
2. Side of Seat Cover is worked in the rnd.

SEAT COVER
Cast on 30 sts.
Rows 1-18: Working back and forth in rows on circular needle as if working on straight needles, and beg with a RS (knit) row, work in St st.
Row 19 (RS): K2, ssk, k to last 4 sts, k2tog, k2 – 28 sts at the end of this row.
Row 20: Purl.
Rep Rows 19 and 20 until 14 sts rem. Continue in St st, without increasing or decreasing, until piece measures about 11 in. (28 cm) from beg, ending with a RS row.
Next row (WS): *P2tog; rep from * across – 7 sts at the end of this row.
Next row: K3tog, k1, k3tog – 3 sts.
Bind off.
Side
With RS facing, pick up and k 29 sts evenly spaced across cast on edge; 49 sts evenly spaced along shaped side edge of Cover; 3 sts across bound off edge; 49 sts evenly spaced along rem shaped side edge – 130 sts. Place a marker for the beg of rnd. Join by working the first st on the left hand needle with the working yarn from the right hand needle and being careful not to twist sts.
Rnds 1-10: Knit.
Rnd 11: *K11, yo, k2tog; rep from * to end of rnd.
Note: The yo’s create eyelets, through which a cord or a length of elastic will be woven.
Rnds 12 and 13: Knit.
Bind off.

FINISHING
Weave in ends.
Note: Cover is secured to seat by means of a knitted cord or a length of elastic, threaded through the eyelets created on Rnd 11 of the side, then knotted under the seat. Pick the method that you prefer!

Knitted Cord Cast on 3 sts. Knit the 3 sts. Do not turn work. *Slide sts to other end of needle and knit them, pulling yarn tightly across the back of the work, (do not turn work); rep from * until cord measures about 24 in. (61 cm) long. Bind off.
Beg and ending at back of cover, weave cord (or length of elastic) through eyelets, adjust to fit bicycle seat, then knot ends.
